  1. I read this a couple of weeks ago. I had no idea that the food movements that gave rise to Kellog, Graham and others followed the beginnings of Christian fundamentalist movements across the country, most notably the Seventh Day Adventists. I'm atheist but I grew up Catholic, and food and health were generally viewed as things to be appreciated and occasionally ritually deprived of in order to appreciate the power of it in our lives as well as to give something up. Fundamentalists and evangelicals see nothing but failings in the human body, equating that to failings of spirit, so fixing the bodies would be the same in their eyes as fixing the soul. Funny thing, now those same groups, except the Adventists, are all about Prosperity Doctrine, and about as far away from the healthy bodies=healthy souls as one can get.
